Montevideo, 25 August 2022 (TDI): On 25th August, Uruguay marked its 197th anniversary of Independence. The day is also called Día de la Independencia and commemorates Uruguay’s Independence from Brazil.
197th Independence Day:
On 25 August 1825, La Banda Oriental now known as Uruguay declared its independence from Brazil. However, Brazil recognized the sovereignty of Uruguay three years later in 1828.
Uruguay’s independence has been hard-won. Since the start of the 19th century, Uruguayan people have survived the control of several colonizing powers.
From England to Spain, to Portugal and Brazil in a short span of time, Uruguans saw the colonization of their land from many.
The day is celebrated with patriotic ceremonies, national anthem recitals, and a grand display of fireworks around the country.
Festivities began a night before, on the evening of 24th August. It is known as the Night of Nostalgia. Consequently, old pop, rock, and disco music is played across the country.
Overview of its History
The region was originally occupied by several Indigenous peoples. It became a frontline in the power struggle between the Portuguese and Spanish, and later Argentines and Brazilians.
When Brazil gained its independence from Portugal in 1822, Banda Oriental became a province of Brazil. The trigger for the independence of countries in Latin America bought the collapse of colonization in the region.

On August 25, 1825, a group called the “Thirty-Three Orientals” led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja and Manuel Oribe declared independence from Brazil.
However, the struggle between the Argentines and Brazilians continued under the instigated Argentina- Brazil War.
Consequently, the Treaty of Montevideo led to Brazil recognizing Uruguay’s independence. It was signed in 1828 with British negotiations.
