UNICEF delivers support to Pakistan

Islamabad, 5 September 2022 (TDI): Thirty-two metric tons of supplies essential for preserving lives were delivered today by United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to Pakistan aiding children impacted by the floods.

Furthermore, these will be delivered right away to families and kids in some of the 72 hardest-hit districts that need them the most. This was shared in a tweet by the official account of UNICEF South Asia.

UNICEF: Supplies to Pakistan

The delivery was made from Copenhagen’s Supply Division to Karachi. Medications, medical equipment, water purification pills, safe delivery kits, and nutraceuticals for therapeutic purposes are also part of the consignment.

Moreover, the Sindh Province’s Ministry of Health and Population Welfare received supplies from UNICEF on behalf of the Pakistani government. The 72 tough districts will promptly distribute the goods to the children and families who require them the most.

Adding to that, Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan made his remarks. “The floods have left children and families out in the open with no access to the basic necessities of life. This shipment is critical and life-saving, but only a drop in the ocean of what is required.”

Moving ahead, he further added, “The risk of an outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dengue, and malaria, keeps increasing every day as people are forced to drink contaminated water and practice open defecation. The dangers of mosquitoes, snakebites, and skin and respiratory diseases are also increasing. We need urgent support to help children grappling for survival.”

Along these lines, the second delivery of 34 metric tons of humanitarian assistance is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. It will contain educational materials, recreational kits to help kids cope with trauma, and resuscitation and sterilization kits. In addition to that micronutrients for expectant mothers, and medications to treat parasitic infections.

Situations in Pakistan

Besides this, over 33 million people are impacted by one-third of the country under water due to the heavy monsoon rains. At least 3.4 million of them—half of them kids—need immediate, life-saving assistance.

Furthermore, since many routes are still impassable due to flooding, relief, and rescue efforts are still incredibly difficult to complete. Around 160 bridges and at least 5,000 kilometers (3,200 miles) of highways have been destroyed.

Additionally, over the past week, UNICEF has provided emergency care services and supplies totaling more than US$ 2 million using pre-positioned emergency resources.

Lastly, UNICEF is requesting US$37 million as part of the UN’s flash appeal for US$160 million to assist the nation’s flood response in order to help children and families who are in need of life-saving assistance.
