New York City, 5 September 2022 (TDI): Today marks the 5th of September as a day for charity. This is the date on which the entire globe celebrates International Day of Charity every year.

Poverty Harms Peace

On this day, philanthropists and NGOs promote a sense of responsibility for defeating poverty. The world celebrates this day to foster the sentiments of love, humanity, kindness, and empathy.

Moreover, charity brings hope in a world full of despair. It promotes unity and strengthens bonds and ties, especially among international actors. In the wake of war and conflict, charity spreads the message of love and humanity.

Furthermore, it eradicates poverty on various fronts, be it climate change, malnutrition, or health. In Pakistan where floods and heavy monsoon rains have caused unimaginable destruction, charity from around the world has functioned as the savior.

Additionally, United Nations recognizes poverty eradication as the greatest global challenge. In the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, United Nations mentions Poverty eradication as crucial for sustainable development.

Besides this, the new agenda talks about global solidarity and unity for the cause of poverty eradication. United efforts to help the vulnerable and needy is the need of the hour. The agenda highlights the role of philanthropists, NGOs, INGOs, and civil society organizations.

Along these lines, the agenda set forth 17 Sustainable Development Goals grouped into six areas: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. These SDGs provide a way forward for all philanthropic institutions.

In the Honor of Mother Teresa

The General Assembly of the United Nations officially designated the 5th of September as the International Day of Charity in honor of the death anniversary of Mother Teresa.

In 1950, Mother Teresa founded the “Missionaries of Charity”. In 1979, she received the Nobel Peace Prize “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace”

She died on 5th September 1997 in Calcutta where she devoted nearly fifty years of her life to the sake of humanity.

Adding to that, Mother Teresa was honored many times by well-known figures all around the world. Also, she was known as the whole United Nations represented by the people of the UN as she spread peace in the world.
