Geneva, 1 February 2023 (TDI): The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) stated that the cost of living is increasing vulnerability for refugees.

Refugees and displaced people around the world lost their homes, employment, schools, and social connections. In countries like Chad, Ethiopia, Lebanon, and Jordan life is difficult.

However, the cost of living is forcing families to move from one place to another. People are in deeply perplexed situations, they are making hard choices about whether to buy food or to send their children to school.

Should they buy medicine or pay next month’s rent?

UNHCR: An Overview

The UN Refugee Agency works in more than 130 countries. It is providing life-saving assistance to displaced people and refugees.

UNHCR is a global organization that is working to save lives, protect rights and build a better life for refugees. The main focus is on refugees, internally displaced communities, and stateless people.

The agency ensures that everyone is rightful in seeking asylum and protection from violence and conflict-driven areas.

But the issue of underfunding, increasing inflation, and increase in fuel create hurdles in service delivery. The agency is facing with lack of cash and a lack of provision of basic commodities and fuel.

Donations to UNHCR

UNHCR has called for donations in form of gifts, cash assistance, and supply of commodities. The donations could ease the burden of people fleeing their homes.

For cash assistance, anyone could donate ranging from $500, $150 to $50, as a one-time payment or on monthly basis. The required currencies are United States Dollar, Euro Pound, and Swiss Francs.

US $200 could provide cash assistance to a refugee family in Chad to cover basic needs like food and medicine. US $150 could provide a dignity kit including sanitary napkins, a pair of underwear, and soap to 75 refugee women in Uganda.

US$ 50 could provide a Venezuelan forced to flee with proper documentation to help them access services like healthcare and education. Donors could contact for information here; donors@unhcr.org.

Monthly gifts help the agency to save more families that are facing forced displacements. The monthly donations to UNCHR would provide relief and protection to refugees.

The donation would help UNHCR to provide protection, shelter, and other forms of assistance. Also, advocate on behalf of displaced and stateless people every year.

The staff of agency staff works as closely as possible with and for people forced to flee, with 90 percent of the workforce based in field locations. A regular donation would help UNHCR to fulfill the immediate needs of refugees such as the cost of food and fuel.

Medium-term donations would help the agency to provide emergency relief to refugee families for about a month. Long-term donations would help to frame strategic planning and implementation in relief service delivery.

The increasing cost is an outcome of the Ukraine War. The war drove the cost of essential food commodities and fuel. This is leading to the forced displacement of people as they are unable to find safety and security.
