President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid meeting with Prime Minister of Cambodia.

Phnom Penh 22 August 2022 (TDI): President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Abdulla Shahid visited Cambodia.

He was called on by, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The meeting took place at Cambodia’s Peace Palace.

UNGA President stated that Cambodia had transformed from a country receiving blue-helmet troops to a country sending troops for peacekeeping operations under the UN umbrella.

“This is a big success and a great change in Cambodia’s image in the international arena,” he added.

Cambodia first sent peacekeepers overseas on the UN peacekeeping missions in 2006. To date, the country had dispatched a total of more than 8,000 peacekeepers to join UN peacekeeping missions in many war-torn countries.

Remarks by UNGA President

Meanwhile, UNGA President also praised the Southeast Asian nation for its full peace, stability, and rapid development. He wished the kingdom to achieve its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.

UNGA President who is concomitantly a Maldivian Foreign Minister also pledged to encourage Maldivian investors to do business in Cambodia. He also mentioned that the two countries still have vast room for further cooperation in trade and investment.

Both sides also discussed Cambodia’s initiatives as ASEAN Chair and UN vaccine support and protection of human rights. For his part, the Cambodian Prime Minister also thanked UNGA President for his good comments on Cambodia.

He also mentioned that the kingdom wanted to see Maldivian investment in the agricultural sector. Moreover, the country particularly looks for development in rice processing for exporting to the Maldives.

UNGA President arrived in Cambodia on Sunday for a two-day working visit. He also paid a courtesy call on National Assembly President Samdech Heng Samrin and met with the Foreign Ministry’s standing secretary of state Ouch Borith.
