New York, 14 July 2022 (TDI): The President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, met the Federal Minister for the EU and Constitution at the Federal Chancellery of Austria, Karoline Edtstadler.

The two officials discussed the role of the general assembly and emergency special sessions on the Ukraine crisis.

They also talked about the global interconnectedness and the significance of multilateralism, agenda 2030, and the SDG targets.

Special session on Ukraine issue

Since 1950, the General Assembly has only conducted ten emergency sessions following Resolution 377A(V), often known as Uniting for Peace.

Sometimes, the security council cannot respond to any crisis due to unanimity among the members with veto power. The resolution empowers the assembly to take a step toward international peace and security.

After Russia vetoed a resolution condemning the attack on Ukraine, Council members voted in favor of calling the General Assembly. Subsequently, the emergency special session of the general assembly on the Ukraine crisis was held on 28 February 2022 to condemn the Russian aggression.

Shahid said in the session that the violence in Ukraine must be stopped. Russia should respect international and humanitarian laws, and discussions and diplomacy must prevail.

However, the assembly decisions are not legally enforceable; they are thought to have political weight since they convey the will of the entire UN membership.

SDG and 2030 Agenda

The high-level Political Forum, HLPF 2022, reflects the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development. The theme of HLPF is to build a better world from the COVID-19 disease while fully implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The HLPF also goes through in-depth the Sustainable Development Goals. Many consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic across all Sustainable Development Goals are considered. The Goals’ integrated, indivisible, and interconnected nature are also discussed.
