Libreville, 20 August 2022 (TDI): The UN General Assembly President, Abdulla Shahid concluded his official visit to Gabon from August 14 to August 19.
During his visit, he highlighted the importance of conservation in the Congo Basin as critical for the environment and the people.

On departure from Gabon after a productive tour focused on nature conservation & sustainable development, the UNGA President thanked the government and people of Gabon for their hospitality.

Additionally, President Shahid’s visit also coincided with Gabon’s National Day celebrations, which mark its independence and usually consist of festivities and a parade.
Also, during the visit, Abdulla Shahid paid a call on Gabon’s President, Ali Bongo Ondimba. President Shahid conveyed his sincere appreciation for Gabon’s consistent support of multilateralism.

Moreover, he expressed his honor and humbleness to receive Gabon’s National Order of Merit. Also, he wished the people and government of Gabon ahead of the National Day celebrations.
Highlights from the visit
The UNGA President also visited the Gabon Special Economic Zone (GSEZ) in Nkok, the country’s 1st carbon-neutral certified industrial zone.

Moreover, all naturally derived goods produced at the facility of GSEZ now bear the hallmarks of sustainability, traceability, and certification. Besides, the president also planted a tree at the end of the site visit.
United Nations Gabon (Nations Unies Gabon) arranged a meeting with civil society and women’s organizations operating in Gabon.
The meeting discussed the issues pertinent to climate change, nature conservation, carbon credits, and their impacts on women, human rights, gender equality, and youth involvement.
Along these lines, UNGA President appreciated the work done by Savina Ammassari, UN Resident Coordinator in Gabon.
