New York, 19 September 2023 (TDI): The world leaders adopted the political declaration to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda at the SDG Summit 2023, held on September 18, ahead of the general debate of the 78th Session of UNGA.
In the political declaration adopted at the SDG Summit, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to effectively implement the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs and uphold all principles enshrined in it.
The 10-page long declaration encompassed the commitment of the world leaders to strive for solutions to the global crises including armed conflicts, adverse climatic conditions and their effects, effects of the COVID-19 pandemics, persistent hunger and poverty, gender divide, racism, etc.
The declaration also stressed obliging the initiatives and agendas launched by the UN in association with governments of the world to reach the fulfillment of SDGs by 2030.
At the SDG Summit 2023, representatives from Member States, UN entities, and civil society engaged in plenary and leaders’ dialogue sessions to debate over the progress achieved by working on SDG agendas and the way forward to reach the 2030 deadline.
In speaking about the political declaration adopted by UNGA, the Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, emphasized “This can be a game-changer in accelerating SDG progress.”
The political declaration focused on envisioning the 2030 Agenda as a plan of action for people, the planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership, leaving no one behind.
The declaration also reaffirmed building peaceful, just, and inclusive societies that provide equal access to justice and respect human rights through promoting effective rule of law, and good governance and ensuring transparent, effective, and accountable institutions.
The declaration also highlighted the alarming issue of the progress of most of the SDGs moving too slowly or being regressed below the 2015 baseline.
In this regard, the declaration also pledged to reduce poverty, hunger, and malnutrition, followed by meeting the humanitarian needs of the people.
Besides, the declaration read to combat climate change effectively with the cooperation of the countries globally.
The declaration also read to create conditions for sustainable, inclusive, and sustained economic growth resolutely to ensure equal work opportunities for all, equal pay for work and also taking into account different levels of national development and capacities.
Apart from that the declaration promised to promote gender equality, empower women and girls, fight against racism and its forms, and promote inclusive quality education, universal health coverage, and social protection.

The declaration also called upon the commitments by leaders to enhance global, regional, national, and local partnerships for working together for sustainable development, engaging all relevant stakeholders.
Moreover, the declaration adopted asserted to find peaceful and just solutions to disputes by respecting international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
Besides that, the declaration enlisted the ongoing summits and agendas by the UN to combat the global crisis and called for renewed cooperation to collectively work on the solutions.
The political declaration adopted by the world leaders at the SDG Summit 2023 now will be submitted to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) for endorsement.
