Paris (TDI): In a significant development, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution aimed at countering disinformation.
The resolution, titled “Countering Disinformation for the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Expression and Access to Information” was co-sponsored by 50 member states and adopted by consensus at the ongoing 220th session of UNESCO’s Executive Board in Paris.
Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, expressed gratitude to member states for their contributions and support, leading to the unanimous adoption of the resolution.

The text highlights disinformation as one of the most critical challenges of our time and positions UNESCO as a central player in a multi-dimensional and multi-stakeholder approach to tackle disinformation, misinformation, and hate speech.
It also emphasizes the role of UNESCO in promoting and protecting freedom of expression and access to information.

Several delegations noted the growing threat posed by disinformation and stressed the importance of collective efforts and close coordination among member states to effectively address this global issue.
