New York, 5 October 2022 (TDI): The United Nations Women continues to stand with the women of Iran. It supports their demands to protest against injustice without reprisal.

Their demands are to be free to exercise their bodily autonomy, seek accountability, and access their basic human rights as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations.

Mahsa Amini Death

Mahsa Amini, an Iranian woman who lived from 2000 to September 16, 2022, was detained by the Guidance Patrol in Tehran on September 13, 2022. She suffered many skull fractures and brain death.

Eventually, Mahsa Amini passed away and left the world with sorrow on September 16, 2022, three days after suffering severe injuries at a Tehran hospital.

Amini’s death provoked massive responses and demonstrations around the world along with the different sections of Iran.

UN Women Concerns

UN Women President, Sima Sami Bahous in her statement shared, “UN Women is deeply concerned and saddened by the death of Mahsa Amini, in Iran, at the age of 22. We convey our heartfelt sympathies to her family.”

She further added that “The death of any young person, any young woman, is a tragedy beyond measure. The circumstances surrounding this series of events, are cause for particular concern.”

Apart from this, the President underscored, “Reports suggest that Mahsa Amini was detained by authorities enforcing strict rules on women’s dress, on 13 September, and that she died, still in custody, three days later.

The precise causes and circumstances of her death are unclear. What is clear is that she was detained and treated in violation of the most basic human rights. The incident also underscores the abuses experienced by women and girls worldwide.”

Additionally, she also said, “In this context, we echo the call of our colleagues at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, for a prompt, impartial, and effective investigation by an independent competent authority. May Mahsa Amini rest in peace.”

UN Women: An Overview

The UN organization devoted to promoting gender parity and women’s empowerment is anointed as UN Women. Women frequently face compensation inequalities and lack of access to appropriate employment due to entrenched gender inequality.

Adding to that, women and girls frequently lack access to healthcare and education, are underrepresented in economic and political decision-making, and are victims of violence and prejudice all over the world.

Also, UN Women, a global advocate for women and girls, was founded to hasten the process of addressing their needs on a global scale.
