UN welcomes ceasefire in Gaza and Israel, commends Egypt

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza and Israel. He also extended his deep condolences to the families of the victims and added that the violence has led to needless human suffering. The Secretary-General appreciated the role of Egypt in bringing the hostilities to an end. He also commended the role of Qatar, Lebanon, and the United States in this regard and called on all sides to observe the ceasefire.

New York, 15 May 2023 (TDI): The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza and Israel. He also extended his deep condolences to the families of the victims and added that the violence has led to needless human suffering.

The Secretary-General appreciated the role of Egypt in bringing the hostilities to an end. He also commended the role of Qatar, Lebanon, and the United States in this regard and called on all sides to observe the ceasefire.

The Secretary-General reiterated the commitment of the UN to the achievement of the Two State solution in line with international law and prior agreements. He stressed the need to restore the political horizon and added that only peaceful negotiations can lead to lasting peace and end the cycles of violence.

Israeli airstrikes killed dozens of Palestinian civilians, including children. Israel accused the Islamic Jihad in Gaza of rocket attacks on Israeli territory. The Palestinian resistance factions in Gaza maintain that the rocket attacks are for self-defense against Israeli occupation and aggression.
