UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomes the 2022

New York, 29 December 2021 (TDI): As the UN Secretary-General stated in his message for the new year, we should “make recovery for the people, the planet, and prosperity” the resolution for 2022.

According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the world is entering the year 2022 with its hopes for the future being tested by deepening poverty and worsening inequalities, unequal distribution of COVID vaccines, and disappointing climate commitments. The world is also experiencing more fighting, division, and misinformation.

In his words, these are not just policy tests, but “moral and real-life tests.” In spite of this, these are endured tests that the human race, can pass if 2022 is dedicated to recovery and progress.

Under the Subject of Resolution for Action

The UN Secretary-General went on to detail how best the recovery should be done on each front. He wisely said that vaccinating every single person in the world was the first necessary step.

The UN Chief says “financing, investment, and debt relief” are needed for the developing world in order to assist them in the economic recovery process. At the same time, in order to heal the wounds of mistrust and division, he added that a renewed emphasis must be placed “on science, facts, and reason.”

Nevertheless, it is clear from Guterres’s words that peace can only be achieved by cultivating “a new spirit of dialogue, compromise, and reconciliation”, and that the restoration of the planet will also require “climate commitments that are commensurate with the scale and urgency of the crisis.”

Together as One, and under that Theme

In his remarks, the UN Secretary-General also acknowledged that “moments of great difficulty are also moments of great opportunity to come together in solidarity.”

The reason for this is that they offer the chance to come together behind solutions that can benefit all people. He further reiterated that the world can collectively move forward together, believing that it can achieve remarkable things.

“Our goal for 2022 must be recovery,” concluded the Secretary-General. “I wish you all a happy and peaceful New Year.”
