Islamabad, 17 August 2022 (TDI): The United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Julien Harneis, called on Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, at his office today.

During the meeting, various areas of work and cooperation between Pakistan and the UN were discussed including the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, flood relief, and food security.
The Prime Minister underscored that Pakistan had been contributing actively to the UN’s work, especially in peacekeeping, climate change, and humanitarian action.
He further expressed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Moreover, the Prime Minister appreciated the important role of the organization in supporting Pakistan’s socio-economic development.
Additionally, he emphasized the country’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and attainment of UN Agenda 2030
Apart from this, the Prime Minister expressed concern about the damage caused by the recent floods across the country. He highlighted that providing humanitarian relief to affected people was a high priority of the Pakistani government.

Moreover, the UN Resident Coordinator Julien Harneis briefed the Prime Minister about the ongoing activities of the UN in Pakistan. He also re-affirmed the UN’s continued support to the country in its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Likewise, he emphasized the UN’s commitment to providing further assistance in the areas of humanitarian assistance, environmental protection, food security, and climate change
Moreover, Sohail Mahmood, Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, and Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning and Development, were also presented during the meeting.
Pakistan-UN Relations
Pakistan joined the United Nations in September 1947, just a month after its independence. Presently, Pakistan is one of the largest troop contributors in the organization, with 8,230 peacekeepers, constituting 9% of total deployment.
Further, the UN provides assistance in Pakistan through its various programs including UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund).
