New York, 10 August 2022 (TDI): Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, during his regular briefing, stated that United Nations (UN) team in Pakistan is making efforts to assist millions of people affected by the recent floods in the country.

Stephane Dujarric further added that Julien Harneis, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator visited the flood sites last week as well as met with the officials and people.
The spokesperson also said that the World Food Program (WFP), along with the UN’s rapid needs assessment, is providing resources to affected communities. Moreover, these resources will be provided for mother and child nutrition, cash, medicines, and blankets.
Pakistan’s collaborations with the United Nations
Pakistan has been a member of the United Nations since 1947. The UN’s first One Programme (OP I) between Pakistan and the UN was signed in 2006.
Since then, three programs have been signed and the United Nations agencies are working through these programs in Pakistan in several sectors.
In 2016, Pakistan affirmed its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Pakistan adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its own national development agenda by passing National Assembly Resolution.
Moreover, in 2016, UNHCR launched the Safe from the Start (SFS) Project in Quetta. The project aimed at supporting the economic empowerment of women. Since then, SFS has provided training in marketing skills to more than 700 beneficiaries.
Additionally, in 2020 UN, in collaboration with, WHO and WFP provided assistance to the people of Sindh amid devastating floods.
76th UN Day
In 2021, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator organized an event on 76th UN Day. Julien Harneis, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, appreciated Pakistan’s constant support and assistance.
Julien Harneis further highlighted the accomplishments of United Nations agencies that work in Pakistan in various areas.
Moreover, Sohail Mahmood, Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, noted Pakistan’s contributions to the UN’s work. The areas of contribution included peacekeeping, climate change, humanitarian action, refugee protection, and international cooperation for sustainable development.
The Secretary also expressed gratitude to all the United Nations agencies working in the country for enhancing its socio-economic development.
