UN, Iran discuss humanitarian crises in Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan & Ukraine

Geneva, 1 March 2023 (TDI): United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs & Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths met the Foreign Minister of Iran, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

The two discussed issues pertaining to the situation of humanitarian crisis. Both sides agreed that the humanitarian crisis of Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen needs special attention from the world political community.

Syrian Earthquake Situation

Amir-Abdollahian stressed the provision of assistance & relief to Syria sent by Iran in the wake of natural calamity.

He said the consequences of the earthquake worsened because of a difficult situation – weather difficulties & the imposed blockade against Syria.

The blockade needs to be removed so that the situation in Syria could be improved. He highlighted that Iran would continue its support along with the UN in the provision of humanitarian relief in Syria.

While Griffiths on his part recognized the support of Iran in the Syrian earthquake. He asked Iran to continue its relief and assistance for the people of Syria that are already facing a crisis due to war.

Political Scenario of Yemen

The Foreign Minister of Iran also discussed the political scenario of Yemen and urged that the war in Yemen must be ended as it is also facing a huge humanitarian crisis. There is a need to lift the humanitarian siege in Yemen.

He also said that Iran is in touch with different Yemeni stakeholders. Yemeni people perceived that the key towards the way of stability is the removal of humanitarian barriers.

Griffiths also briefed the Iranian diplomats and representatives about the supporting mechanisms the UN is practicing in Syria and Yemen. He mentioned their efforts for bringing peaceful resolutions to the war-trodden Yemen.

Migrants of Afghanistan

Amir-Abdollahian also highlighted that Iran is hosting millions of refugees from Afghanistan. In this vein, the UN Representative said that it is inevitable to create a sustainable infrastructure for the provision of services to the migrants.

Martin Griffiths said that the UN and its agencies are there to meet all the needs. He also urged support from Iran including the world communities to assist in Afghanistan.

Ukraine Issue

Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian also highlighted the issue of Ukraine, he said that Iran has bilateral ties with Russia but we are against the aggression of Russia.

Iran would not provide its military assistance to Russia because belligerency is not a viable solution. Iran respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries including Ukraine.

Lastly, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs & Emergency Relief Coordinator assessed that peace and security in Ukraine are necessary for sustainable peace around the world.
