The accident occurred on Friday when a residential complex, decades old, in Baghdadi, Lyari, collapsed. At least 26 dead bodies, including children and women, have been recovered to date, while one victim was rescued but could not sustain injuries.Â
Besides the horrific loss of life, the building also crushed 35 rickshaws parked under it, leaving dozens of drivers jobless and their families in a sudden financial crisis.
The authorities have vacated and sealed three adjacent buildings that were designated as dangerous, while the province’s building control authority (SBCA) is still identifying over 50 dangerous buildings in Karachi’s South.

The assistant commissioner of the area has ensured that work to demolish such buildings will be launched forthwith to prevent any such catastrophes in the future.Â
In response to the tragedy, the Sindh government has ordered an inquiry, and a high-level committee has been directed to compile a report and prepare a briefing, today.
Sindh Building Control Authority has confirmed that the building was more than 30 years old and had been declared dangerous, while an official notice to vacate was given as recently as June 25.
