Abu Dhabi, 5 August 2022 (TDI): The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its support for Beijing’s One-China principle in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC).

The Foreign Ministry emphasized the “importance of respecting the ‘One China’ principle,’ while calling for adherence to relevant United Nations resolutions.”

The UAE also shared concern over the impact of provocative visits on international peace and stability.

The ministry urged “prioritizing diplomatic dialogue in an effort to ensure regional and international stability.”

The UAE’s remarks came following US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

One-China Principle

One China Prinicple is the diplomatic acknowledgment of China’s position that there is only one Chinese government.

Under the policy, the states recognize and have formal ties with China rather than Taiwan. China sees it as a breakaway province to be reunified with the mainland one day.

China and UAE Diplomatic Ties 

The United Arab Emirates and  China established diplomatic relations on in November of 1984. Since then, the two countries’ political, economic, and trade relations have continuously developed.

Relations between the UAE and China have warmed in recent years, with many Chinese businesses setting up in the Gulf state.

China was the UAE’s top trade partner from 2020-2022. Other cooperation saw the UAE deploying and manufacturing Chinese vaccines to counter the Covid-19 pandemic.

The agreements signed by the two sides include the Sino-UAE Agreement on Cultural Cooperation and the Agreement on Medical and Health Technical Cooperation Between the Ministries of Health of China and the United Arab Emirates.

Furthermore, it includes Protocol on China Sending Doctors to the United Arab Emirates, Protocol on China Further Sending Nurses to the United Arab Emirates, and Sino-UAE Agreement on Judiciary Extradition.
