UAE-Japan strategic cooperation

Tokyo, 10 June 2023 (TDI): On Friday, Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, warmly welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of UAE, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Amidst his official tour to Japan, FM Abdullah held discussions with PM Kishida to strengthen their mutual collaboration. He passed on well wishes and greetings of the President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed to the PM and Japanese people.

Strategic Cooperation between UAE and Japan

The two sides explored ways and means of fostering diplomatic engagement between the UAE and Japan. They discussed different strategies and approaches to enhance UAE-Japan strategic cooperation.

Both sides focused on their strategic partnership in the energy sector as well as their joint actions in various international organizations.

Sheikh Mohamed emphasized that 50 years of UAE-Japan strategic cooperation have established a unique example.

Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI)

PM Fumio Kishida expressed his pleasure to meet with Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed for the first time in six years. Moreover, he reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthen its cooperation under the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI).

The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Initiative (CSPI) was signed between Japan and UAE in 2018 to enhance their historic partnership. Under this initiative, bilateral collaboration was strengthened in 12 areas.

The initiative underlined the cooperation in the economic, political, agriculture, education and defense fields. Furthermore, the initiative also mentioned partnerships in bilateral and multilateral engagements, humanitarian aid and assistance and energy sectors.

 Guiding Principles of Cooperation

PM Kishida mentioned the recent G7 summit in Hiroshima, where various guest countries showed their commitment to the rule of law.

They underscored their firm position against unilateral efforts aimed at forcefully changing the status quo.

Sheikh Mohamed affirmed UAE’s strong adherence to the rule of law and strictly observing the status quo. He also expressed UAE’s desire to cooperate with Japan on various platforms, including the United Nations Security Council.

This visit was a part of the UAE’s efforts to strengthen its partnership and cooperation with friendly Asian countries.
