New York, 21 September 2022 (TDI): UAE Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan, exchanged his views in his meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for West Africa and the Sahel, Mahamat Saleh Annadif.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. In the meeting, the officials from both states exchanged views on Sahel’s stability and security, including on the Security Council.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan assured Mahamat Saleh Annadif of the UAE’s continuous prioritization of Sahel’s state security and overall stability.

As part of the UAE’s robust engagement with African countries on the sidelines of the 77 sessions of the UNGA, Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan met with the officials of many countries.

About UNGA 77

The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly began on September 13, 2022. Csaba Kőrösi is the President-elect for the sessions happening in New York this year.

The first day of the High-level General debate started on Tuesday, 20 September 2022. Notably, this is the first time since the outbreak of the Covid-19 Pandemic that the UN general assembly has called an in-person meeting in two years.

The agenda of the 77th session of the UNGA is, “A watershed moment: Transformative solutions to the interconnected challenges underline the urgent and unprecedented need for Global cooperation to address these difficulties.”

The heads of state and governments will initiate dialogue on challenges like Climate change, food security, accession to education, and Gender equality. In addition to that, the officials will also discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine and its future implications.

UAE and African States Mutual Cooperation

Even before the pandemic, the UAE appeared as a major partner of the African continent in multilateral development organizations.

In 2019, the UAE was the 10th biggest donor (in volume) to African states for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Covid Pandemic boosted the support of the UAE to African states even more.

An Emirati exports arm also announced a new agreement to boost trade with several West African states this year.
