Turkmenistan, Afghanistan Sign Energy, Transport Deals

Ashgabat, 2 September 2024 (TDI): Turkmenistan and Afghanistan have signed a series of agreements in the energy and transport sectors following a high-level meeting in Ashgabat.

The meeting, held at the “Garagum” hotel’s conference hall, resulted in several significant agreements.

Notably, an accord was reached between the TAPI Pipeline Company Limited and the Afghan government concerning the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.

In addition, Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Energy and Afghanistan’s state-owned Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan power transmission line project.

Deals in Transport Sector

Another MoU was signed between Turkmenistan’s “Turkmendemiryollary” Agency and Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Works regarding the construction of facilities at the Turgundi railway station.

A Work Plan was also finalized for the 22-kilometer Turgundi-Sanabar railway section, part of the larger Turgundi-Herat railway project.

The discussions included several Vice-Chairmen of Turkmenistan’s Cabinet and heads of various ministries.

The Afghan delegation, led by Acting Minister of Mining and Petroleum Hussein Badri, expressed a commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Both nations emphasized the growing positive momentum in their collaboration and expressed their intent to further develop productive ties.

They anticipate that these efforts will significantly boost trade, diversify economic relations, and enhance mutual trade turnover.
