Ankara, 16 September 2022 (TDI): Deputy Foreign Minister of Türkiye and Director for EU Affairs, Faruk Kaymakcı, met the directors of the EU delegation of Türkiye headed by Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut.

They exchanged fruitful thoughts on the relations between the two. In the meeting, they emphasized the importance of dialogue and communication between the countries.

The High officials stressed keeping communication and dialogue alive in all areas which would help in further advancing the diplomatic relations.

Türkiye-EU relations

Relations between the European Union (EU) and Türkiye were established in 1959. But in 1963, the European Economic Community and then Turkey signed the Ankara Association Agreement, which expanded their economic and trade relations.

It is pertinent to note that Turkey is the EU’s 6th biggest trade partner, representing 3.6% of the EU’s total trade in goods with the world in 2020.

Likewise, the EU is its largest import and export partner, as well as its main source of investments. In 2020, 33.4% of Turkish imports came from the EU and 41.3% of the country’s exports went to the EU.

According to the Pre-Pandemic reports, €69.8 billion of Türkiye’s exports were directed toward the EU, and €58.5 billion of its foreign direct investment (FDI) came from the EU.

More than 5.5 million Turkish citizens are living in EU member states. The EU has a strategic interest in the development of a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with the country.

Moreover, Türkiye also holds an important geographical position in the region. The country shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea. This makes Türkiye an important actor amid Russian Aggression against Ukraine.
