Geneva, 13 September 2022 (TDI): The Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the UN, Ambassador Sadık Arslan, delivered a keynote at the 51st regular session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. The 51st session of the Council opened on 12 September 2022.

The Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the UN, Ambassador Sadık Arslan, delivered the statements on behalf of Türkiye. In his statement, he raised the key issues about human rights in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.

The 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council

The 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council starts from 12 September to 7 October. The Council will hold an enhanced interactive dialogue on issues including intimidation and reprisals, arbitrary detention, systemic racism, and enforced disappearances.

In addition, the Council will also share views on Climate change, water and sanitation, the rights of indigenous peoples and people of African descent, and colonialism, among others during the sessions.

On the first day of the session, the Council presented an opportunity to address grave human rights situations in States including Afghanistan, Burundi, China, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, and Venezuela, among many others.

The Human Rights Council holds no fewer than three regular sessions a year, for a total of at least ten weeks. They take place in February-March, June-July, and September-October on issues happening across the globe.

Türkiye is a member of the UN Human rights Council. The country attaches particular importance to the UN legal instruments and its cooperation with the said organization in the field of human rights.

Turkish representatives actively participate in the Human Rights Council (HRC) sessions held three times every year in Geneva, where issues related to human rights are discussed. Moreover, Türkiye is a party to sixteen UN human rights conventions.
