Ankara, 8 April 2023 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov visited Türkiye to meet his counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu to discuss potential areas of cooperation and regional and international issues.

During Lavrov’s official visit, both ministers had extensive discussions on a wide range of essential issues on the bilateral and international agenda. Trade, energy, and tourism were also suggested as critical interests.

At the discussion, Çavuşoğlu emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine should be resolved through international law-based negotiations.

He cited the success of the Istanbul Grain Deal, brokered by the United Nations and Türkiye, as an example of how diplomacy can bring about positive change.

Istanbul Grain Deal

The Istanbul Grain Deal opened a safe maritime humanitarian corridor in the Black Sea, allowing over 900 ships full of grain and additional foodstuffs to leave three Ukrainian ports: Chornomorsk, Odesa, and Yuzhny/Pivdennyi.

This initiative has helped alleviate the suffering of many people affected by the conflict in Ukraine. Minister Çavuşoğlu stressed that Türkiye would spare no effort to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region.

The Foreign Minister of Turkiye hoped peace negotiations would effectively settle the Ukraine conflict and pave the way for a brighter future for all parties involved.

Çavuşoğlu affirmed that Türkiye remains committed to working with all nations to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. The country will continue to play a constructive role in resolving conflicts peacefully, in line with its longstanding tradition of diplomacy and dialogue.
