Ankara (TDI): Türkiye commemorated the 74th anniversary of its membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Wednesday, spotlighting its strategic importance in Euro-Atlantic security.
Official statements from the Turkish National Defense Ministry and the Communications Directorate highlighted Türkiye’s enduring contributions since joining NATO on February 18, 1952; now four decades plus into its partnership with the alliance.
In a message marking the anniversary, Ankara celebrated “74 years in NATO. Respected ally for world peace,” noting its role as one of the top five contributors to NATO operations and missions thanks to its position as the country with the second-largest army in the alliance.
“The strategic location, strong armed forces and crisis management experience of our country play a critical role in ensuring deterrence within NATO, combating terrorism, and safeguarding regional security,” the Communications Directorate said in its anniversary message shared on Turkish social platforms.
Under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Türkiye also intends to contribute to NATO’s 2030 vision, focusing on developing defense technologies, cybersecurity capabilities and evolving responses to next-generation threats.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Türkiye’s continued “critical and comprehensive contributions” to Euro-Atlantic security, anchored in its robust military and dynamic defense industry.
Ankara announced that it will host the upcoming NATO Summit on July 7–8, 2026, drawing allied leaders to the Turkish capital and reinforcing its pivotal role at a time of shifting global security challenges.
Beyond Ankara’s official statements, senior NATO officials have echoed praise for Türkiye’s key position. NATO’s spokesperson highlighted Ankara as a “staunch ally and valued contributor,” noting its sustained investments in defense, active engagement in alliance missions, and significant industrial contributions.
Türkiye’s strategic geography, anchoring NATO’s southeastern flank, combined with its military capabilities and defense industry, cement its influence in alliance deterrence posture and regional stability efforts from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Black Sea and beyond.
