Ankara, 08 September 2021(TDI): Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated on Tuesday that talks with regional rivals, the UAE and Egypt, to end a years-long schism are progressing. He also stated that if the meeting between the two countries goes well, Ankara may appoint an ambassador to Egypt.
In recent weeks, Turkey has maintained diplomatic relations with both the UAE and Egypt, and a negotiating team from Cairo arrived in Ankara on Tuesday, with Egyptian and Turkish officials participating in the second round of talks.
Since 2013, when Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi was deposed by President Abdel Fattah el-coup Sisi, the two countries have not sponsored each other’s ambassadors. Turkey has declared that Sisi is not the country’s legitimate leader.
Last week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke via phone with the UAE’s supreme ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, according to Turkey’s top diplomats.
