Washington DC (TDI): President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to visit Washington in the coming week.
The visit comes shortly after Carney’s recent election victory as leader of Canada’s Liberal Party.
Speaking during a cabinet meeting, President Trump described his conversation with the newly elected Canadian leader as cordial. “He’s a very nice gentleman and he’s going to come to the White House very shortly, within the next week or less,” Trump stated. “I spoke to him yesterday, couldn’t have been nicer, and I congratulated him.”
Prime Minister Carney assumed office following the departure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and a closely contested election campaign. His victory was partly shaped by commitments to maintain Canada’s economic independence and respond firmly to US trade policies.

Despite previous public disagreements over tariffs and US-Canada relations, both leaders appear to be signaling a willingness to work together. President Trump said he anticipated a positive relationship going forward: “I think we’re going to have a great relationship. He called me up yesterday, he said ‘Let’s make a deal.’”
During the Canadian election, opposition leader Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party was initially favored, but shifting public sentiment and political dynamics contributed to Carney’s win. Trump commented on the election outcome, saying, “They both hated Trump, and it was the one that hated Trump, I think, the least that won.”
Prime Minister Carney, a former central banker with international experience, emphasized economic management and stability throughout his campaign. Observers note that his professional background may influence his approach to bilateral discussions, especially on issues such as trade, climate policy, and cross-border cooperation.

The White House has not yet confirmed the specific date of the Canadian Prime Minister’s visit, but diplomatic sources expect formal meetings and discussions on key regional topics to be part of the agenda.
As both leaders prepare to meet, the upcoming visit offers an opportunity to reset and potentially strengthen the longstanding partnership between Canada and the United States. The development is being closely watched in both countries, as they navigate a complex global landscape and seek areas of mutual cooperation.
