Trudeau imposes retaliatory tariffs on United States

Ottawa (TDI): Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs on United States goods. With 25% levies on a raft of U.S. imports. On Saturday, the prime minister directly pointed out to Americans that tariffs will have real repercussions for them. 

In this regard, Canada has been the best ally of the United States in every bad and good times. Both countries have shared the longest border in the world. Now, this relationship comes to a new low after Trump announced severe tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.

During a news conference, Trudeau announced tariffs on C$155 billion ($107 billion) on US goods. In this sense, those on C$30 billion will take effect from Tuesday, the same day as Trump’s tariffs, and duties on the remaining C$125 billion in 21 days, he said. 

Moreover, this announcement came right after the tariffs declaration started by Trump on 25% Canadian and Mexican imports and 10% tariffs on Chinese goods. In such a scenario, economists emphasised that it is the new initiation of a trade war and it will increase inflation across the region.

Furthermore, Canada is giving a tough time to the Trump administration by implementing tariffs on a large variety of goods including American beer, wine and bourbon, as well as fruits and orange fruit juice from Trump’s home state of Florida. Trudeau also mentioned that the coming days would be tough for Canadians but that Americans would also suffer from Trump’s executive actions. 

He said during a news conference while addressing U.S. citizens, ‘’Your jobs will also be at risk, it will also pave the way for shutting down American plants and manufacturing facilities which is working across Canada. 

“They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store and gas at the pump.”

Having said that both countries have shared the longest border of 9,000 km (5,600 miles) U.S.-Canada border with $2.5 billion trade in a day particularly in energy, and manufacturing, as per the Canadian government statistics from 2023.
