Washington D.C, 3 November 2021 (TDI): On November 3, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) commemorates the milestone, which marks 60 years since it was founded by President John F. Kennedy.

USAID’s Regional Mission Central Asia joins the global celebration of the 60th anniversary of its founding. For six decades, It has built a reputation as a world leader in international development in partnership with countries around the world to strengthen communities and improve lives.

Regional Health Development Funds: USAID

In the 1980s and early 1990s, USAID assisted in the creation of Regional Health Development Funds (Former Provincial Medicines Centers). In the mid-1990s, USAID reduced its workforce by more than 30 percent and shut down 24 missions around the world, including Cameroon.

Due to changing development priorities and the need to focus on scarce resources. However, It continued to invest in Cameroon with its offices in Washington and Accra in the following areas: health; environmental management and natural resources; economic growth and trade; peace and governance; and humanitarian assistance.

In 2020, USAID reopened its office in Cameroon with a budget of $ 114 million. Last year, USAID protected more than 1.9 million children in northern Cameroon from malaria by providing monthly preventive treatment for children under the age of five during a period of severe infection.

Assistance to 1.4 Million Refugees

USAID also provided humanitarian assistance to 1.4 million refugees, internally displaced persons, and host communities. To date, USAID has provided approximately $ 16.8 million to strengthen Cameroon’s response to the COVID pandemic.

USAID promotes peace, tolerance, good governance, and human rights in Cameroon reaching an estimated 2.5 million listeners through 16 radio stations in the Far North region.

In more than 100 countries around the world, the USAID team and partners are working together to develop and support projects that help save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democracy, and improve health, education, and economic prosperity.

Since 1991, USAID has supported Central Asian countries. And it supports a stable and prosperous Central Asia that is free to pursue political, economic, and security interests on its terms, and its partners; Central Asia connected with world markets and open to foreign investment; and Central Asia with strong, democratic institutions, the rule of law, and respect for human rights.
