Team China’s Gong Lijiao won the women’s shot put competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics on Sunday with a mammoth throw of 20.58m and winning her first gold medal. The victory marked China’s first Olympic gold in Athletics.

The four-time Olympian finished with her personal bests throwing 20.53 meters in the fifth round and 20.58m in her sixth attempt, followed by USA’s Raven Saunders and New Zealand’s Valerie Adams who took the second and third positions respectively.

After the spectacular victory on Sunday Gong expressed her excitement over the win and said she did not only win the gold medal but also got her personal best. She also acknowledged how proud she was to win the title for the people back home and said she’s not only proud of herself but also for her country and all the people in China who supported her.

Gong previously won a bronze in the 2008 Olympics and a silver in the 2012 Olympics.
