Dar es Salaam, 9 October 2021(TDI): Tanzania received 1,065,600 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine from China on Friday, as part of the COVAX programme.
High-ranking government officials and representatives from the United Nations, WHO, and UN Children’s Fund attended the ceremony.
Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Dorothy Gwajima, thanked the COVAX Facility initiative for launching a programme to vaccinate Africa against COVID-19.
The donation will aid Tanzania’s vaccination campaign, which launched on July 28 by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Minister Gwajima said that As of Oct. 7, 760,962 persons had been vaccinated in Tanzania’s mainland and 10,800 citizens had been vaccinated in Zanzibar.
Xu Chen, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, said that the donated vaccines will help Tanzania to fight the pandemic. Chinese Government is collaborating with Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation to secure the donation of two consignments of COVID-19 vaccines from China totaling around 1.5 million doses. Xu Chen, Minister Counsellor added.
