Islamabad, 3 August 2022 (TDI): Hina Rabbani Khar, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan received Honda Taro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan at the Foreign Office on Tuesday.

The Pakistani State Minister acknowledged the trusted development partnership between the Pakistani and Japanese governments. She also emphasized further deepening relations to promote bilateral trade.

Moreover, she assured Pakistan’s commitment to promoting international peace and stability. Recently, on July 25, Wada Mitsuhiro, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan met with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Foreign Minister of Pakistan.

They agreed on further strengthening Japan and Pakistan’s diplomatic ties as well as enhancing engagement and dialogue at all levels.

Moreover, the Japanese Ambassador also met Miftah Ismail, Finance Minister of Pakistan on July 26. They discussed matters of mutual interest.

Additionally, the Finance Minister assured that the Pakistani government is committed to strengthening economic and trade relations between the two states.

Pak-Japan Relations

The Pak-Japan established diplomatic relations in April 1952. Both states marked the 70th anniversary of their relations this year.

Pakistan was among the states who opened their commercial office in Japan as well as opened its Embassy in Tokyo. Japan also opened one of its first trade offices in Karachi.

In 2005, the states signed Pakistan-Japan Joint Declaration entitled “Pakistan-Japan at a new frontier; towards a renewed, enhanced and robust relationship. It was signed during the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to Pakistan.

Further, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari visited Japan in 2011 and signed Joint Statement on Japan-Pakistan Comprehensive Partnership.

Both parties are signatories to several MoUs and agreements including in the areas of commerce, education, technical cooperation, telecommunication, etc.

Additionally, Japan is one of the largest trading partners of Pakistan with an annual trade of $1.5 billion. Moreover, the Japanese government supports Pakistan in areas of health, disaster management, agriculture, and water supply.

In 2019, the Japanese government extended grand aid of $82.12 million to Pakistan. Apart from this, Pakistani-Japanese Friendship Festival was held in Tokyo in 2017. It strengthened the cultural ties among nations.
