Washington DC, 7 March 2023 (TDI): The United States (US) Secretary of the State, Antony Blinken recently released a statement in which he welcomed today’s historic announcements made by Korea and Japan.
The Governments of the Republic of Korea and Japan regarding the conclusion of discussions on their bilateral relations.
“The ROK and Japan are two of the United States’ most important allies, and we are inspired by the work they have done to advance their bilateral relations”, the US Secretary said.
Furthermore, he applauded the President of South Korea; Yoon Suk-yeol, and the Prime Minister of Japan; Fumio Kishida, and their respective administrations for their courage and vision.
Also, he called on the international community to join the commendation of this momentous achievement.
“The trilateral relationship between the United States, the ROK, and Japan is central to our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Which is why I, along with other senior Department colleagues, have invested so much time and focus on this critical partnership”, US Secretary further added.
Finally, he looked forward to continuing to work with both countries through regular trilateral dialogues. This will ultimately help to advance global peace and security.
Agreement between South Korea and Japan
To mention, this agreement was focused on addressing the sensitive issues of Japanese colonial occupation of the Korean peninsula and related legacies, such as forced labor and the comfort women system.
South Korea announced that it will compensate Korean laborers forced to work for Japanese companies during World War II, in an attempt to resolve one of the thorny historical issues that have plagued relations with Japan.
Under the agreement, Japan has expressed remorse over the issue and committed to providing 1 billion yen (approx. US$8.3 million) to a foundation to care for the victims of forced labor and comfort women.
In addition, both countries have agreed to cooperate closely in order to further promote peace and prosperity in the region.
The agreement between the Republic of Korea and Japan is a groundbreaking milestone that opens the door to a new era of friendship and cooperation between these two countries.
It shows the world a commitment to resolving historical disagreements in a manner that stresses mutual respect and understanding.
The agreement also creates a foundation for future collaboration on matters of regional security & economic development, which will help bring greater stability and prosperity to the entire region.
By addressing the sensitive issues of Japanese colonial rule on the Korean peninsula, both countries are acknowledging the wrongs of the past while committing to resolving these matters, moving beyond the legacy of the past & looking ahead to a brighter future.
