South Korea Court Begins Yoon Impeachment Review

Seoul (TDI): South Korea’s Constitutional Court is set to begin reviewing the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his December 3 martial law attempt on Monday, while investigators said they plan to question him this week.

All 6 current justices of the court will attend the first meeting over the impeachment, which the opposition-led parliament approved on Saturday.

The court has up to 180 days to decide whether to remove Yoon from office or to reinstate him.

Justice Kim Hyung-du has said the Constitutional Court will deliberate over procedures and how to conduct arguments.

In 2017, the court started oral arguments about three weeks after parliament voted to impeach then-President Park Geun-hye over abusing the powers, and took 3 months to issue a verdict to strip her presidency.

Yoon and a number of top officials face possible charges of insurrection, for the brief martial law.
