South African Freedom Day 2023

Pretoria, 27 April 2023 (TDI): South Africa observed the 29th National Freedom Day under the theme “Consolidating and Safeguarding Democratic Gains.” President Cyril Ramaphosa attended celebration events held in the North West Province.

History

27 April marks the date of commemoration of the first democratic elections held in the country in 1994. These were the first post-apartheid national elections to be held in South Africa.

For the first time, anyone could vote regardless of race. Nelson Mandela won these elections and arose as a freedom fighter not only in South Africa but the entire world.

On this day every year, South Africans honor the unsung heroes and heroines. They were the ones who battled for freedom against the brutality of the racist all-white government of South Africa. Consequently, it paved the way for a non-racial society that celebrates the equality and diversity of its people.

Celebrations

The Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defense Force, President Cyril Ramaphosa, attended the National Salute fly-past and the 21-Round Gun Salute. These symbolize the national pride of the people of South Africa and the dedication of the armed forces to the defense of South African skies.

The celebrations were held at the Manzilpark Stadium in Klerksdorp, North West Province. While addressing the gathering at the event, President said:

“On the 27th of April 1994, South Africans of all races, languages and creeds stood in long winding queues to exercise their democratic right.”

Moreover, he asserted that the people of South Africa have seen great suffering. Nonetheless,  what defines them is their resistance, struggle, and hope. He mentioned all the milestones that the country has passed in reducing poverty, illiteracy, and food insecurity.
