Islamabad, 14 April 2023 (TDI): Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change and Pakistan People’s Party Vice President, Sherry Rehman, has been recognized as one of TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2023.
To mention, this recognition comes as no surprise as she has been a tireless advocate for climate justice and a voice for those most affected by the climate crisis.
Her Remarkable efforts
Last year, Pakistan suffered devastating floods that affected over a third of the country, despite being responsible for only a fraction of global emissions.
Sherry Rehman was quick to act, using her position as Minister for Climate Change to bring attention to the plight of those who had lost everything to the floods.
In November, Sherry Rehman attended COP27, the UN climate summit in Egypt, where she passionately spoke out about the blatant injustice faced by the most vulnerable countries.
Thus, her tireless engagement in negotiations led to a historic decision, where the world community agreed for the first time to establish new loss and damage funding arrangements to support these vulnerable countries.
This decision is a big step toward climate justice, but there is still much work to be done. The climate crisis is hitting hardest those countries that are least responsible for it, and more people like Sherry Rehman are needed to continue the fight for climate justice.
In accepting this recognition, Sherry Rehman acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed optimism about the progress that can be made when people come together for a common goal.
Also, she stressed the importance of collaboration and partnerships across sectors and countries to address the urgent need for action on climate change.
As Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman has shown true leadership in her efforts to raise awareness and advocate for climate justice.
Her work has not gone unnoticed, and her inclusion in TIME’s 100 most influential people of 2023 is a testament to her dedication and impact.
Congratulations to Sherry Rehman on this well-deserved recognition and the nation looks forward to her continued leadership in the fight for climate justice.
