PM Shehbaz Meets Turkish President Erdogan in Cairo

CAIRO (TDI): Prime Minister Shehbaz meets Turkish President Turkish President on the sidelines of the 11th D-8 Summit in Cairo.

The two dignitaries discussed ways to strengthen the historic ties between Pakistan and Türkiye, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

PM Shehbaz praised Türkiye’s progress under President Erdogan’s leadership.

“The two countries should enhance cooperation in the fields of trade, IT, agriculture, and green technology,” the premier said.

Both leaders agreed to work towards achieving the $5 billion bilateral trade target. They also vowed to expand cooperation in the economy, trade, defence and other national issues.

President Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s support for Jammu and Kashmir, while PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on the Cyprus issue.

“The bond between Türkiye and Pakistan is rooted in history,” Shehbaz said, emphasizing closer cooperation to promote peace and stability in the region.

The two leaders condemned the violence against Palestinians since October 2023 and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to an independent state.

The developments in the Middle East and Syria also came under discussion.

It should be noted that PM Shehbaz is in Cairo on a two-day visit to attend the 11th Summit of the Developing Eight (D-8) countries.

The theme of the 11th D-8 Summit is “Investing in Youth and Supporting SMEs: Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy.”

At the Summit, the Prime Minister will underline the importance of investing in youth and SMEs for building a strong and inclusive economy; creating jobs; advancing innovation; and promoting local entrepreneurship.
