.Islamabad, 14 September 2021 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, addressed the United Nations’ high-level ministerial meeting held in Geneva. The meeting was held to discuss the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
Shah Mahmood stressed the need for solidarity for the people of Afghanistan in this critical time. He stated that the international community should work for nation-building in Afghanistan. There is a strong need to renew renewing development partnerships and meeting the humanitarian needs of the Afghan people.
He underscored that the long-lasting solution for the Afghanistan issue is based on providing development opportunities to people. The global development community must provide basic necessities of life such as better livelihood conditions, food, health, and education.
Furthermore, he emphasized that peace in Afghanistan is contingent upon political stability. It is necessary for Afghanistan to have economic stability. Therefore, proactive engagement in Afghanistan was necessary. The disengagement would lead to instability and chaos in Afghanistan as happened in the past.
Foreign Minister highlighted Pakistan’s efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. Pakistan has also helped to establish humanitarian corridor to deliver essential supplies to Afghanistan. He mentioned that Pakistan had been hosting over 3 million Afghan refugees for four decades, and had earmarked more than 1 billion USD in Afghanistan for development projects.
Foreign mister shah Mahmood appreciated the leadership of UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and the UN agencies for ensuring humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan.
