SCO, UN Reaffirm Cooperation at Fourth Round of Secretariat Consultations

The Fourth Round of Consultations between the Secretariats of the SCO and the UN

New York (TDI): The Secretariats of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the United Nations (UN) convened their fourth round of consultations at UN Headquarters in New York last week, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation on regional and global issues.

The SCO delegation was led by Deputy Secretary-General Ahmad Saidmurodzoda, while the UN side was headed by Assistant Secretary-General Mohamed Khaled Khiari, who oversees the Middle East, Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.

Representatives from the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia also participated in the discussions.

The consultations covered a broad range of topics related to the work of both organizations. SCO officials briefed their UN counterparts on preparations for the upcoming SCO Summit in Bishkek, the outcomes of ministerial meetings held during Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship, and ongoing negotiations aimed at enhancing the Organization’s institutional framework.

The delegation also highlighted efforts to expand cooperation between the SCO Secretariat and various UN specialized agencies.

The UN delegation, in turn, outlined its ongoing work under the “Climate, Peace and Security” agenda, initiatives to support stability in Afghanistan, and programs designed to assist Central Asian countries in promoting lasting peace and regional security.

Both sides described the consultations as constructive and reaffirmed the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in addressing shared regional and international challenges.

Cooperation between the SCO and the United Nations is guided by the Joint Declaration on Cooperation, signed in Tashkent on April 5, 2010, which provides the framework for regular engagement between the two organizations
