Rwanda, Singapore reaffirm bilateral collaboration

Singapore, 1 October 2022 (TDI): The President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, called on the President, Halimah Yacob, and the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, at the Istana on September 30 to exchange views on topics of mutual interest.

The President of the Republic of Rwanda is on a working visit to Singapore. Presidents of both countries reaffirmed the friendly and warm relations between both countries as fellow small states.

Both sides discussed ways to further extend bilateral cooperation in fields of mutual interest. They also had discussions on global developments.

The Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, and the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame discussed Prime Minister Lee’s successful visit to Rwanda in June 2022 in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Both sides had a productive discussion on bilateral cooperation, including education and capacity building and they also discussed both countries’ close cooperation at multilateral forums.

Bilateral Relations between Rwanda and Singapore

Both states enjoy a special relationship on many different fronts. The two countries are continents apart but share many commonalities.

Both countries established diplomatic relations on 18 March 2005, and have conducted a host of trade agreements since then.

The High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda in Singapore was officially opened in 2008 and an agreement to avert double taxation was signed between the two countries in August 2014 to facilitate bilateral trade.

Both countries have also hosted various bilateral exchanges in recent times. Singapore is also the largest trading partner of Rwanda in the world, with approximately US$150 million worth of foreign direct investments made by Singaporean companies in Rwanda.

Apart from this, people-to-people exchanges and tourist visits between both countries have been steadily increasing since diplomatic relations were established.
