Moscow, 20 January 2023 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov met with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric as the seeks to promote humanitarian assistance.

In the opening remark Foreign Minister of Russia stated that this is the first visit of Mirjana Spoljaric since she was appointed to the office adding that Russia appreciates all the contributions the organization has offered to the country.

The organization has been a strong member in assisting victims in all humanitarian issues in the region and Russia as a whole. Russia’s cooperation with the ICRC has been gaining momentum in recent years.

The country has been working hard with the organization in the promotion of humanitarian assistance in countries like Syria, Afghanistan, and many other hotspots of crisis.

Their crisis with Ukraine changed the narrative of their activities with the organization last year. But they are hopeful that they will resume in other to provide their best support to the organization.

Also, the Foreign Minister stated that “Over the year of our cooperation with the ICRC, we always had sincere respect for its mandate and valued your impartial, politics-free work.

We have never taken advantage of our relations with the ICRC to achieve our domestic political agenda.” They also talked about the incident of the Ukraine-Russia war.

The President of the ICRC appealed to the Russian government to promote peace and find ways of solving the issue with the government of Ukraine. The Foreign Minister added that the happening right now is the influence of the West in Ukraine.

Other developmental initiatives were raised during the meeting, and both promised to ensure that the pledges made are fulfilled.

The government of Russia also added that they are looking forward to the organization’s access in the current matter and for them all to promote the needed development they want.
