Moscow, 19 January 2022 (TDI): Russian President, Vladimir Putin, held a telephonic call with the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega. Putin extended congratulations for Daniel Ortega’s re-election as the President of Nicaragua last week.

He also reaffirmed the Russian government’s support for the Nicaraguan Government to ensure national sovereignty. The telephonic exchange took place on January 18, 2022.

During the conversation, both leaders discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation as well. This included areas related to agriculture, transport, and vaccines. However, Putin put stress on combating the spread of coronavirus through Russian vaccines. He also offered joint production which will help to manage the mass distribution of Vaccines in Nicaragua.

According to the head of Russia’s Gamaleya Research Centre, Alexander Ginsburg, the efficiency of a vaccine against Omicron is seventy-five percent. This efficacy level can reach a hundred percent by adding a dose of Sputnik Light booster.

The discussion also touched on the strategic partnership between Russia and Nicaragua. Both leaders emphasized the importance of mutual collaboration at an international platform. Indeed, Nicaragua is the entry point for Russia’s consolidated presence in Latin America.

Daniel Ortega maintained that this bilateral relationship has the potential for socio-economic development. Moreover, he expressed heartfelt gratitude for Russian solidarity towards the people of Nicaragua. In this context, both leaders agreed to maintain contact for further collaboration in the future.

In 2014, Putin visited Nicaragua and held brief negotiations with President Daniel Ortega in Managua. The purpose of the visit was to enhance bilateral cooperation in social and economic spheres. It also marked the 70th anniversary of the bilateral cooperation of both states. Both countries can invest in agriculture, grain, pharmacology, and law enforcement agencies. Currently, the production of Sputnik V is more focused.

It is to be noted that Daniel Ortega is seventy-six years old and won the Presidential elections in November. He resumed office on 11 January 2022. He is the main political leader of Nicaragua since 2007.
