Moscow, 20 November 2021 (TDI): Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Abdulaziz Kamilov, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, on 18 November. Both parties held a productive discussion on bilateral relations between their countries. Minister Lavrov began his opening address by expressing friendly greetings and also remarked on the common agenda of both nations in the matter of regional and global crises.
RUSSIA-UZBEKISTAN ON AFGHANISTAN
In particular, he noted that the Russian Federation and Uzbekistan share a very similar stance on the socio-political situation in Afghanistan. Lavrov stressed that it was a matter of concern for the whole international community. He then mentioned the steps taken to cater to this issue.
The humanitarian crisis occurring in Afghanistan is not news to anyone. After the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the country faces economic, political, and social problems. Further in his speech, Lavrov highlighted that the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Afghanistan will be celebrated in 2022.
UZBEKISTAN-RUSSIA RELATIONSÂ
He noted that together, the achievements and milestones of both countries, with particular reference to growth rates in trade. He also stated that further cooperation was underway, to strengthen ties in innovations and new technologies. Joint ventures in the sectors of education and culture were also being given considerable attention, as they attract the interest of the local people of Russia and Uzbekistan.
MEETING BETWEEN MINISTERS
Minister Lavrov also happened to mention the objectives of his diplomatic exchange with Uzbekistani officials. He affirmed that the delegations would draft a joint political statement on collaboration in international information security. Although this political statement would be once the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, traveled to Moscow.
He also mentioned that, during this presidential meeting, both parties would sign 18 documents. According to Lavrov, this reflects firm cooperation in a multitude of matters between Russia and Uzbekistan. Specifically, he singled out the Agreement on Ensuring International Nuclear and Radiation Security. Additionally, Lavrov expressed both parties’ intention of organizing a program of cooperation between the two ministries for the years 2022-2023.
He explained that this would constitute multiple events and conferences to promote coordination between Russia and Uzbekistan. Booth countries will coordinate to achieve their common goals. This would greatly strengthen their diplomatic connection. Lastly, he expressed the shared aim of improving bilateral relations with the global community. To do this Russia desires to establish peace and stability in and around Central Asia.
