Beijing, 4 February 2022 (TDI): Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, met the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, for the upcoming Beijing Olympics 2022. The meeting took place in Beijing on February 3, 2022.
Beijing Olympics 2022 and the Year of Tiger
Russian Foreign Minister thanked the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China for inviting him to Beijing on eve of the Lunar New Year. 2022 is the Lunar Year or Year of the Tiger in China. Therefore, China is celebrating a tradition of welcoming visitors during the New Year Holiday.
Russian Foreign Minister reiterated that the Year of Tiger is Russia’s year. That is why he is pleased to pay a visit to the People’s Republic of China at this precious moment. He also intended to see his counterparts as well.
Russian Foreign Minister Key Statements
Most importantly, Sergey Lavrov stated that this is a good opportunity to discuss all issues and exchange views. He also discussed the forthcoming visit of Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to China. However, President Putin will visit China on February 4, 2022.
It is pertinent to note that this meeting was the first face-to-face meeting of both foreign ministers in more than two years. And, it is because of the pandemic situation which has imposed travel restrictions.
But, Russia values the cooperation and support of its Chinese Friends. Russian Foreign Minister further remarked that relations of both countries are based on broad public consensus.
In addition to that, these relations are not strengthened at the expense of other countries. Above all, the Russian Foreign Minister stated that foreign ministries of both countries are working together to maintain predictability and stability in international matters.
Besides, Winter Olympic Games will open on February 4, 2022. In this regard, Sergey Lavrov said that it is a mega event that demonstrates that China can organize mega-events and international competitions. In the same vein, Beijing will be the first city in the world to host both the winter and summer Olympics.
Russia opposes to Beijing Olympics 2022 Controversies
Meanwhile, Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Russia, like China, opposes the boycott of international competitions. These sports events deserve respect and not politicization.
He also reiterated,
“The 24th Winter Olympic Games is a magnificent event that I am sure will provide the entire international community with a new striking demonstration of the ability of China to organize and hold major international competitions.”
Certainly, high-level sports are not a tool for exerting pressure. Lastly, the Russian Foreign Minister wished Chinese and Russian Olympians victories and new records.
