Santo Domingo, (TDI): Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a joint press conference with Dominican President Luis Abinader in Santo Domingo where they discussed various points, including economic development, security, migration, financial improvement, crisis and trade.
Tammy Bruce, the official representative of the Department of State said on Thursday in an X post,
“Marco Rubio has arrived in Santo Domingo for his Caribbean visit. The Dominican Republic has demonstrated leadership in tackling regional issues, including the crisis in Haiti. We will collaborate to promote freedom and security in the region.”
President Luis Abinader invited Rubio and communicated appreciation for the U.S. bolster in the battle against combating drug trafficking, migration and unpredictable relocation. President Luis Abinader said,
“I appreciate the U.S. for its support in the fight against drug trafficking, organized crime, and irregular migration, which shows our shared commitment to a safer Caribbean region that is more prosperous.”
On the other hand, Rubio lauded the Dominican Republic’s efforts in combating drug trafficking, corruption and crime. He announced his plans to provide waivers for foreign aid programs to support these crucial efforts. He said,
“I am pleased to announce that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enforce the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in the Dominican Republic who will collaborate with the local police to enhance security conditions.”
Furthermore, both leaders discussed the current situation in Haiti with Rubio emphasizing the need for a joint universal response.
He further clarified that,
“The solution for Haiti is in the hands of the Haitian people. But we will help. We cannot ignore the problems there.”
Dominican President on the Haitian situation said,
“We discussed the crisis in Haiti. This is a problem that requires a joint and solid response from the entire international community. We have reassured that there is no Dominican solution for the Haitian crisis.”
Moreover, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Dominican President Luis Abinader also discussed the upcoming Summit of the Americas in the Dominican Republic in December 2025. Rubio expressed the United States’ will to participate in the summit and worked with the Dominican Republic to ensure its success. He highlighted the importance of the summit in promoting regional cooperation, economic development, and democracy.
