Jaishankar’s G20 visit to South Africa on geopolitical talks

Johannesburg (TDI): Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will visit Johannesburg for two days. This is following an invitation from South Africa’s Minister Ronald Lamola to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at the Nasrec Expo Centre.

External Affairs Minister’s participation will strengthen India’s engagement with G20 nations and amplify the voice of the Global South.

He is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers Meeting (FMM) to discuss key geopolitical and economic matters.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will officially open the G20 FMM today. The meeting, hosted under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, is themed “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”

South Africa’s G20 Presidency began in December 2024 and will oversee around 130 working group meetings and 23 ministerial-level meetings.

These discussions will culminate in the G20 Leaders Summit in November 2025. The two-day FMM will focus on global geopolitical issues and review South Africa’s G20 Presidency High-Level Deliverables.

It will also assess the G20’s impact over its two decades of existence under the Review of G20@20.

The G20 has evolved from a crisis-management platform into a forum addressing financial stability, climate change, sustainable development, and global health.

South Africa’s presidency prioritizes Africa’s development and aligns with the African Union Agenda 2063.

The meeting takes place amid US-Russia discussions on the Ukraine conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has opted out, citing concerns over the agenda.

The US will still have a representative at a lower level. India continues to advocate for “dialogue and diplomacy” in resolving the Ukraine conflict.

EAM’s participation at the FMM will reinforce India’s stance while engaging in discussions on global peace and cooperation.
