Representatives of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland meet UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Geneva, 30 September 2021(TDI): The representatives of Baltic countries along with representatives of Poland called upon the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The permanent representative of Lithuania, Andrius Krivas; Estonia, Katrin Layachi; Poland, Zibigniew Czech; and Latvia, Janis Karklins; met Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees

The representatives of the aforementioned countries had earlier expressed their concerns for the human rights of refugees in Europe. All representatives had expressed their opinion that the treatment of refugees must be humane and respectable.

The permanent representatives of the Baltic countries, and of Poland called upon the UNHCR to take notice of human rights violations committed by such regimes in Europe.

Recently, the treatment of refugees by Belarus at its border with the European Union has sparked concerns. This meeting was to alert the UNHCR of the possible deteriorating human rights situation.

The representatives reaffirmed their commitment to the rights of refugees in the region.
