Kabul, 13 August 2021 (TDI): On Thursday, Qatar as the host country, issued a Chairman’s Statement on behalf of regional and international actors after three days of extensive talks and discussions with the Afghan negotiating team.
On August 10, representatives from China, Uzbekistan, the United States, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Qatar, the United Nations, and the European Union met in Doha.
Later on August 12, representatives from Germany, India, Norway, Qatar, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Turkmenistan met in Doha.
All participants discussed the status of intra-Afghan negotiations and current obstacles and opportunities with the negotiating parties.
At the end of the meeting, the Chair issued a statement indicating that all participants agreed that the peace process needs to be accelerated as soon as possible to secure a political settlement and a ceasefire. The participants called for inclusive governance, human rights protection, a framework to deliver a representative government, and adherence to international law. They emphasized their refusal to recognize any Afghan government imposed by the use of military force.
They have pledged to assist in Afghanistan’s reconstruction once a political settlement is reached. The participants have also expressed their appreciation for Qatar’s efforts.
