New York, 25 September 2021 (TDI): Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Althani discussed the Afghan situation and the Taliban’s role, in his speech at the 76th Session of UNGA.
The Minister said that the Taliban need to change themselves for the better. He said those who are part of the Taliban may reform and work on it. However, it would take a concerted effort, particularly from Muslim countries. When you look at the Taliban now, you will notice that they are not the same Taliban.
Perhaps the ones fighting are not the same as those who were negotiating.
He said if the 1990s Taliban can change, why can’t we expect them to change today? Moreover, he supported that an inclusive government is needed for peace. This is the only way foreign parties can contribute towards peace and stability in Afghanistan.
