New York, 7 September 2022 (TDI): The Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, reiterated Qatar’s support for all efforts made to promote a culture of peace, at the UN High-Level Forum on the Culture of Peace.

Moreover, the State of Qatar’s commitment was assured in the effective implementation of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, during the UN session.
The session was convened by Abdullah Shahid, President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), under the theme, “The Culture of Peace: Importance of Justice, Equality, and Inclusion for Advancing Peacebuilding.”
Remarks by Qatar’s Representative
Sheikha Alya Ahmed stated that “the culture of peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but rather it is diligent work to build resilient and inclusive societies for all, achieve sustainable economic and social development, and respect human rights.”
She stressed the need to promote a culture of peace for combating social injustice, hate speech, misinformation, violence, and terrorism.
Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN highlighted that the most effective way to promote a peaceful culture is by making and providing education a priority.
She stated, “providing quality, equitable and inclusive education for all, including women and girls, is the basis for building lasting peace and ensuring prosperity for many years to come for all humanity and the entire planet.”
Moreover, she emphasized that Qatar has made financing transformative education that changes the lives of all one of its priorities at home and abroad.
Sheikha Alya further mentioned that the State of Qatar also welcomed the “Transforming Education Summit”. The summit was convened by the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and will occur from 16-19 September 2022.
Apart from this, she reiterated Qatar’s support for the establishment of an international day to combat Islamophobia. She added, that reviving such a day would be important in promoting a culture of peace and tolerance at all levels.
Importance of sports
The Permanent Representative of Qatar stressed the importance of sports in building a culture of peace, solidarity, tolerance, social integration, and understanding between nations.
Moreover, she mentioned about FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which will be hosted by the State of Qatar. It would be the first-ever FIFA world cup to be organized in the Middle Eastern region.
She stated, “The culture of peace will be at the forefront of the efforts made to organize the World Cup”. Sheikha Alya added that this tournament will represent the link for billions of people, and will serve as a melting pot for all cultures.
