Doha, 23 July 2022 (TDI): Qatar has partnered with the Carbon Council and Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORDMENA) to eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022 Sustainability Strategy.

The State of Qatar is all set to host this year’s FIFA World Cup from 21 November to 18 December 2022. All the stadiums selected for the matches are within 50 kilometers of the center of Qatar’s capital, Doha. This is to keep the travel time between matches to a minimum as the travel of thousands of people will inevitably impact the climate.

The organizer of the mega event, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 (Q22), and FIFA and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) have committed to protecting and conserving the environment.

The Sustainability Strategy is a joint effort of all three event organizers to mitigate and offset greenhouse emissions. In its goal for sustainability, Qatar has partnered with Carbon Council and GORDMENA to deliver a fully carbon-control event.

The carbon inventory of the Carbon Council will work in collaboration with the FIFA World Cup. It will measure the progress of emissions reduction to achieve energy and water-efficient stadiums.

In addition, the Sustainability Strategy includes a comprehensive set of initiatives to mitigate tournament-related emissions. These include low emission transport and sustainable waste management practices.

Moreover, Qatar has also committed to advancing toward low-carbon solutions in the country and the region.

Sustainability

Over the past decade, FIFA has portrayed its commitment to strengthening programs related to environmental protection. It has continued to stress and focus on issues such as climate change, waste management, recycling, and sustainable construction.

In 2016, FIFA was the first sports federation to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. Its objective is to gather sports federations, organizations, teams, and athletes to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
